Financial safety matters.

Modern-day scammers and fraudsters have developed sophisticated tools and tactics. It's more important than ever to learn how to keep your money and identity safe.

Prevention is protection.

Recognizing the common warning signs is the first line of defense against scams or fraud. Learn how to keep what matters most to you safe and secure.

Scammers may:

  • Pretend to be from an organization you know, like financial institutions, the government, schools, and more.
  • Invite your attention with a problem. Remember, we will never call, email, or text you asking for personal information.
  • Lie about prize money in a lottery or sweepstakes, but will ask for a payment to access the cash.
  • Pressure you to act immediately and unconventionally.
  • Insist that you pay them through a money transfer company or gift cards.
  • Send you a fake check, tell you to deposit it, and ask for the money.

To protect yourself, you should:

  • Block unwanted calls and text messages.
  • Never give personal or financial information in response to an unexpected request.
  • Resist pressure to pay or act immediately.
  • Know how scammers want you to pay.
  • Stop any suspicious activity and talk to someone you trust.
  • Contact us if you feel that you may be a victim of fraud by calling 1.800.944.2200 or visiting a local First City branch.

Additional tips to prevent fraud.

Scams come in many forms. Here's a list helpful tips to guide you if you ever feel uneasy about an email, call, or suspicious activity.

Email

  • Check for misspelled words, bad grammar, and/or typos.
  • Be cautious of clicking links and opening attachments unless you know the sender or expect an attachment.
  • Never share a one-time passcode meant for you.
  • Look at the salutation, as legitimate businesses use personal salutations.
  • Keep personal information to yourself.
  • Be suspicious of urgent or immediate responses or unauthorized login attempts.
  • Don't believe everything you see, including brand logos, names, and addresses.
  • Double-check the recipient group, email status, or sender for suspicious addresses and names.
  • Contact the source from a new email or phone call to confirm it's real, instead of replying.

Passwords

  • Never share passwords with anyone, including friends and family.
  • Use multiple, different passwords to keep your accounts safe from a breach.
  • Make passwords at least 8+ characters long, including numbers, capital letters, and symbols.
  • Password-protect your phone.

Miscellaneous

  • Phishing Attacks - These attacks start when you click on seemingly legitimate links that ask for your login or to change your password. When in doubt, log in to your account by manually typing out the official site's URL in your browser.
  • Secure Devices - Make sure your devices are secure. Malicious software, including keyboard loggers, can record your keystrokes, steal passwords, and more. Use up-to-date anti-malware software and update your operating system.
